Melbourne is Australia’s restaurant and shopping mecca. It’s the perfect place for those who want to eat, drink, buy and be merry. But it’s total hell for people like me who don’t!
It’s a bugger. The last thing you need when you’re trying to lose weight is the temptation of all the things you have to avoid. A trip away from the safety and routine of home can be a minefield, but it’s a good chance to test your resolve.
The early morning flight to Melbourne started with a champagne breakfast. Long-time friends Tayla, ollie and Dur had no hesitation in hoeing into their first glass. My flute tried its best to seduce me, before I handed it over to Tayla.
With four hours to kill while we waited for our rooms, the girls were gagging to get into the shops. I had made a pact with myself not to buy any new clothes until I lost 10kg – a reward for the first milestone. What was the point of buying great clothes now, when in a couple months I would be swimming in them?
Also, I still wasn’t excited about whipping my clothes off, because whatever I put on still seemed like just camouflage for the unsavoury terrain underneath. Not shopping, however, is torturous. I have a greater respect now for the poor men who have been dragged through shops by female enthusiasts. Why do women have to try on every pair of shoes in every store? Why does the decision process always have to be such an ordeal?
There are thousands of restaurants in Melbourne, all touting mouth-watering menus, but by the time I had thrown alcohol and shopping out the window, food was a cinch. I inhaled green stuff, avoided sauces, ignored fried things and picked only the healthy meats. But apples were my saving grace. Every time I felt hungry, I ate an apple, knowing it was a mini “upper”.
Before I went away, Scotty said to me, “Think of it this way. Those around you are eating bad, ruining themselves and they’ll wake up tomorrow feeling like crap. By eating well, you’ll get a good night’s sleep and feel 100%. Look forward to how you’ll feel tomorrow from eating right now. Mr just think of me yelling at you.”
And he was right. Each day I woke up hangover-free, I clocked up two good runs and was rewarded by losing another 1.4kg.
It takes a lot of willpower to change the habits of a lifetime, but if you want to you will. I have lost 5.4kg in just three weeks and I have never done that before.
