A white coat. U.S. researchers found that volunteers who wore white coats made half as many errors in mental agility tests. It seems that the white coats increase confidence, which can boost problem-solving skills, say the scientists at Northwestern University, Chicago.

Ditch it

Worrying about bugs on your toothbrush. Mouths harbour thousands of germs naturally, says the American Dental Association, so we don’t need to buy toothbrush ‘sanitising’ products. Rinsing under water and letting them air-dry is sufficient.

Don’t sit back during a big meal — stand up between courses. A study of 19 volunteers found that just two minutes of light activity every 20 minutes helps to keep blood sugar under control, due to muscle movement improving metabolism.
