Bed rest can lead to delays in getting treatment, reduce mobility and lengthen recovery time.
A UK study has found more than a third of people think going to bed is the best remedy, but experts say physiotherapy and exercise programmes are much better methods of tackling the problem.
Lack of movement due to being in bed can exacerbate pain and stiffness, lead to muscle wastage and, in some cases, result in weight gain, which puts further stress on your back.
