Ping-pong is one of the few competitive sports you can play at a fast pace without straining the joints, and is an excellent way to improve balance, co-ordination and mental alertness. One hour of play will also burn around 236 calories. However, there are much more effective ways to burn calories and fat. It takes just 24 minutes of swimming breaststroke to burn the same amount of calories – and because the body is cushioned by water, swimming is kinder to the joints than other activities, such as running. Yet, by working the whole body, it burns a comparable number of calories and similarly works the cardiovascular system. As water is 12 times as dense as air, it is a resistance exercise and a great way to improve muscle tone and flexibility
