With each new year comes reflection and new goals, whether it be something as simple as learning to not worrying about the things you can’t control or big ones like preparing to do the incredible and gruelling hike up Mount Everest.

Here, we talk to some of our favourite TV and radio stars about their current health and fitness levels and what they plan to do to look after their wellbeing this year.

Kanoa Lloyd

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

I had to get a bit serious about my fitness at the start of last year (which is very out of character for me) in order to prepare for my trek through the mountains in Vietnam. I don’t really consider myself a fitness person, but on that trip I realised that if you stop overthinking, you can achieve a lot.

Goals for 2020?

I’ve just started seeing a personal trainer who is hilarious, inspiring and makes me do things that hurt. At the moment I’m seeing her once a week, but in 2020 I’d like to see her more often, the goal being to stop exercise from being something I ‘have’ to do to something that I do for myself.

Sharyn Casey

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

I promised myself that I would prioritise my mental health and have compulsory Pilates days because the regular moving and breathing made such a huge difference to my wellbeing.

I’m really proud of sticking to it. I’m still addicted to chocolate, though.

Goals for 2020?

I want to learn to meditate and actually practise it every day. I want to learn to focus on controlling the controllable more and not worrying about the things I can’t.

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

It was the year I discovered my love of running outdoors. I was never a runner, but I used to force myself to do 30 minutes on the treadmill once in a while, just to keep my fitness up.

In an effort to cut down on using my car so much this year, I realised it was silly to drive to the gym for a run, when I could explore my neighbourhood!

Now I love pounding the pavement on crisp mornings and have discovered so many wonderful community spaces.

Goals for 2020?

I’m in the early stages of planning a trek to Everest Base Camp. Hiking is my absolute favourite thing to do and I have so many hikes planned around Aotearoa in 2020.

Everest Base Camp has been on the bucket list for so long and I think it might be the perfect 30th birthday present to myself.

Megan Annear

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

It was amazing for me – I now have a really good routine when it comes to mental health, food and exercise.

I need all of these things to be in a good place for my job and to cope with the 4.30am starts!

Goals for 2020?

I have really bad knee issues from sports injuries when I was younger, so my plans are centred on physiotherapy and strengthening my legs and glutes. I’d like to try to be able to get out of bed without pain in the morning!

I would also love to be able to run around and do sports again, so I’m really focused on becoming stronger to hopefully make that a reality.

Ngahuia Piripi

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

I can proudly say I probably got my gym membership’s worth this year and didn’t just sponsor the gym. I made an effort to actually try to be active both in the gym, as well as outdoors.

Goals for 2020?

I live by a few sayings and “There’s always room for improvement” is one.

This coming year I’d like to improve more than just the physical aspects – discovering and working on all things that keep me well mentally, spiritually and physically.

Miriama Kamo

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

A bit stop-start, a bit all over the place.

I prioritised the health of the planet with my zero-waste efforts but, interestingly, lately that has tipped over into my personal health.

I am not a great fan of doing exercise, but I know it’s important, so I decided that I’d try a new approach – what if I treated my wellbeing as if it were my job?

In other words, with dedication, care and enjoyment. So, that has been my mission for the rest of 2019.

Goals for 2020?

To brainwash myself into loving exercise more. I am a cyclist and I love that, but I’d like to apply that same attitude to other forms of exercise.

So, ideally, in 2020 I’ll have a great routine and renewed attitude to prioritising what this body needs to go happily and healthily through life.

K’Lee McNabb

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

I had a lot of healing and strength building, mentally and physically, in 2019 – doing Dancing With the Stars four months after a C-section and juggling a full-time job, four kids and dancing – I freaking nailed dropping that baby weight and kick-starting my journey of being a stronger and healthier woman.

Goals for 2020?

To be healthy and fit enough to keep up with my kids! I have to work on more quiet time, mindfulness – and maybe meditate and slow down a bit.

Stacey Morrison

How did 2019 stack up for you in terms of health and fitness?

I focused on health more than fitness, because of being time-poor and I need to even things up in 2020.

I managed to fit some yoga in, and realised that I am pretty active as a mum, but I need to work on my cardio fitness.

I tried to make up for less exercise by good food choices and some supplements like magnesium for sleep and an excellent women’s multivitamin.

Goals for 2020?

We came up with the idea of doing a half marathon as a work team – watch this space!

I’ve done two before, one pre-children, one post, with a 10-minute drop in time after kids. Surely, I can do better than that?
