Tips for recreating Marilyn Monroe’s makeup

Marilyn Monroe did the blonde bombshell look perfectly – here’s how you too can be a ‘50s knockout.

Marilyn Monroe had a classic look that’s never gone entirely out of fashion. With the recent hit movie My Week with Marilyn, starring Michelle Williams, her platinum hair and 1950s-style makeup are seriously hot again.

Marilyn’s makeup

Apparently the Hollywood icon spent 90 minutes a day in hair and makeup, which explains why she was infamous for being late. For those of us on a tighter schedule, the key is bold brows, liquid eyeliner and matte red lips, according to top makeup artist Nikki Lovrich. “It’s a style that never dates and always looks glamorous,” she says.

On the eyelids, define the crease with a soft pinky brown and go for a bold black eyeliner against the upper lashes. Nikki has a useful tip for anyone struggling to get a steady line. She suggests drawing it on with pencil first and then tracing over with a pen liner. I’m a fan of the gel liners which I think are softer on “mature” faces.

Now for the brows – invest in an eyebrow kit and get a spoolie brush for shaping, a water-resistant powder to fill gaps, an angle brush to apply it and a clear wax to set brows. Finish with lashings of black mascara. Then add a couple of layers of a true-red matte lipstick.

MY BEAUTY SECRETS

Pebbles Hooper (22) is the daughter of World designers Denise L’Estrange-Corbet and Francis Hooper and runs an Auckland stationery store called Pencil Boutique.

My beauty philosophy is… Less is usually more!

The skincare products I can’t live without are… Aesop Perfect Facial Hydrating cream, Purifying Facial Exfoliant and Fabulous Face Oil. They’re so simple to use and leave your skin feeling rejuvenated. I also make sure to always drink plenty of water which I believe helps feed the skin from the inside out.

My haircare secret is… I don’t look after my hair as well as I should, but I wash it every day and try to keep it away from my hair irons as much as possible. I also use Moroccanoil when blow-drying my hair because it’s usually then that my hair gets dehydrated.

The must-have products in my makeup bag are…  My Kiehl’s Lip Balm, a bottle of water, Maybelline NY Master Precise Liquid Eyeliner and my MAC Pro Longwear Concealer.

My biggest beauty sin is… Eating bad food. The worse my diet, the worse my skin becomes.

The best thing my mother taught me about beauty was… To never have chipped nails and how to apply lipstick properly. Liner first, then fill in the lips and afterwards press a tissue between them to make sure it’s really stuck in there!
