Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry don’t hold hands at this engagement

Arms by sides? That's not like them!

The couple is rarely seen together without holding hands. But last week they deviated from their usual loved-up displays when they joined the Queen for an appearance at the Young Leaders Reception at Buckingham Place.

Instead of holding hands, Harry kept his arms by his side and Meghan clutched her purse – and it was all because they were in the presence of Her Majesty.

Harry and Meghan have always shown their affection in public.

They’re so loved-up!

But in front of Harry’s grandmother they keep their hands to themselves.

Harry and Meghan’s public affection is unusual for royal behaviour. Despite their 70 years of marriage, the Queen and Prince Philip never show affection in public.

According to royal biographer Gyles Brandreth, the Queen and her husband never hold hands in public because of the “stoic values” of their generation, he told PEOPLE.

During a recent engagement with the Queen, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex kept at a distance.

Earlier this year (before the couple was married), the Queen is said to have given Harry a telling-off for his continual PDAs with Meghan.

Harry was warned to tone down the public displays of affection with Meghan and start acting more prim and proper like the other royals – for instance, Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Duchess Catherine and Prince William rarely show affection in public, but still seem completely connected.

It appears that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are following the Queen’s wishes, as not even a graze of the hand was noted at their most recent outing.
