She may have undergone intense princess lessons, but Meghan Markle has had the grace of a Duchess all along.
A letter has been unearthed from Meghan’s high school days written by teenage Meghan to a classmate who was, according to her former teachers, “very shy” and ‘a “bit of a loner”.
The letter, written in 1993 and only recently rediscovered, reveals Meghan’s sincerity and kindness during her time at Immaculate Heart High School in California.
The Duchess of Sussex‘s former headmistress, Christine Knudsen, said she received the letter from one of the student’s in Meghan’s peer group, according to the new documentary How to Bag a Prince that aired on Channel 5 in the UK.
“Meghan wrote her the most wonderful loving note,” says Ms Knudsen.
“Even though Meghan was not her close friend at all. It just shows the depth of [Meghan’s] heart.”
Written in perfect, flowing handwriting, the letter reads: “Dear Michelle, You are so strong and so wonderful — your courage in strength in times of hardships is as admirable as your optimism and friendly nature.”
“I am so lucky to have you in my group and to be able to lead you on this adventure. Never stop sharing your beautiful spirit and always remember how special you are. I am here if you ever need me. I love you, Meghan.”
According to Meghan’s religious studies teacher, Maria Pollia, Meghan had compassion for not just her school peers, but other’s in their community in need and once asked how she could help the city’s homeless.
Pollia told the show’s producer’s, “One day, after class, Meghan approached me and said, ‘So tell me more about serving on Skid Row.'”
“And so I suggested she continued to volunteer at this soup kitchen in her senior year. Meghan always took it a step further, not just distributing food but learning people’s names, learning their stories.”
Long before becoming a royal, Meghan had a philanthropic focus. She worked as a Global Ambassador for World Vision; supported World Vision’s Clean Water Campagin in 2016; worked with the Myna Mahila Foundation; was a One Young World Counsellor; and a United Nations advocate, to list just a few of her charitable achievements.
It should come as no surprise really that Meghan saw a fellow female student in need and reached out to show her support. From a young age, Meghan has showed her feminist streak.
At 11-years-old, after seeing a sexist advertisement on TV, she wrote letters to Hillary Clinton, Linda Ellerbee, Gloria Allred, and the company responsible for the ad. Meghan received replies from all three women, and the soap company changed the wording in the commercial.
