Meet Sarah Goss, the 23-year-old captain of the women’s rugby sevens team competing at this year’s Olympic Games.

“I started when I was 13 at Feilding High and got into it through friends,” Sarah says of her journey to Rio.

“I was at boarding school at the time, so it was almost a time filler. The more sport I played, the less time I had doing homework, so that was perfect,” she quips.

Nevertheless, the team’s debut in Rio marks the achievement of a long-held dream for Sarah, who says she feels the pressure of playing rugby in New Zealand.

“When you’re a rugby player in New Zealand, you’re expected to do well every time you pull on that black jersey, so there’s that added pressure going into Rio 2016!” she says.

“But I’m really excited to be a part of our Olympic team.

“I don’t have a lot of fears – I just try to prepare as best I can for game time. Now Im about to fulfil a dream of mine and will hopefully come back with a medal.”

“We’re a rugby nation, so you’re expected to do well every time you put on that black jersey,” she reveals.

“I’m really excited to go and be part of the NZ Olympic team, it’s so prestigious around the world. I hope we can bring back some medals for the country!”

“I don’t have a lot of fears- I go into a game knowing that if I’ve prepared right, there’s not much else I can do,” she says.

“I’ve dreamt of this for a long time,” Sarah says of the team’s debut Olympic bid.

“For me, it’s a massive dream. And hopefully, coming back with a medal- a gold medal- for NZ.”

Sarah says her motto is to be the best she can be, both on and off the field.

“Do it now. I’m just trying to live by that,” she reveals.
