Popular radio stars and long-time lovers Polly Gillespie and Grant Kereama have just announced their separation. The couple shocked listeners on their morning show, The Hits, by revealing live on air that they have been living apart for the last two weeks. The couple made the decision to announce it on their show, as they wanted their listeners to know first.
“If you listen to the show you’ll know that Polly and I have been married a long time …” said Grant. “But for the last two weeks, Polly and I have been living apart. We are separated.
“It isn’t because we don’t love each other,” said Polly. “We are best friends, we love working together, we have wonderful children together. It’s just life.”
“It is life. It’s not an easy thing to admit to, guys,” said Grant. “We want to make a commitment to you, who choose to listen to our show, that we will continue to do our show. Because we are best friends, I don’t see anything changing in our show.”
On whether the separation is permanent, Polly said: “Who knows what the future holds. Never say never.”
The couple will continue on their breakfast show, although admit it will be challenging. “It’s business as usual,” said Polly, “[but] it’s hard, it’s really hard.”
Polly and Grant have been together since the late eighties, when they worked together on the breakfast show for ZMFM in Wellington.
