From the stunning red carpet gowns to host Chris Rock’s blistering opening monologue, the 88th Annual Academy Awards featured its fair share of must-see moments.
Kicking things off with a series of jokes about the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, Chris had the A-listers riveted with his jabs at everyone from Hollywood itself to Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties – I wasn’t invited … that’s not an invitation I would turn down!” he joked, before turning his focus to Will.
“It’s not fair that Will Smith was this good [in Concussion] and didn’t get nominated. You know what’s also not fair? That Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West!”
However, the host took a more serious note when he addressed the lack of opportunities for black actors in Hollywood.
“It’s not about boycotting. We want opportunity! We want black actors to get the same opportunities – that’s it.”
Elsewhere throughout the night, Mad Max: Fury Road dominated the night’s technical categories, picking up gongs for film editing, costume design, makeup, sound editing, sound mixing and more.
In the acting categories, The Danish Girl’s Alicia Vikander won Best Supporting Actress, while Mark Rylance was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role in Bridge of Spies. Front-runner Brie Larson won Best Actress for her role in Room, while Leonardo DiCaprio finally took home the gold for his turn in The Revenant.
His director, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, also won for Best Director, while Spotlight was crowned Best Picture.
