Beloved Hollywood icon Mary Tyler Moore has died aged 80, her publicist confirmed to media today.
The star, who was best known for her roles in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, had been battling diabetes for decades.
“Today, beloved icon, Mary Tyler Moore, passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine,” her publicist Mara Buxbaum said in a statement.
Mary passed away in hospital in Connecticut, where she had reportedly been on a respirator for the past week.
The actress, who shot to fame in her early twenties after being cast in several TV series and movies, became a household name in the ’60s – when she landed a role opposite Dick Van Dyke in the show by the same name.
Mary won an Emmy for her portrayal of Laura Petrie, Van Dyke’s wife, and later went onto land her very own show in the ’70s. She also starred in over a dozen films, most famously Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Ordinary People.
The fiercely feminist actress was married three times, with her last husband – Dr. Robert Levine, surviving her.
Tributes have been flowing from around the world.
