Heath Ledger’s father has spoken out about the actor’s sudden death in 2008, saying the tragedy was “totally” his son’s own fault.
Kim Ledger has told the Daily Mail Australia how his daughter Kate begged Heath not to mix sleeping pills with painkillers just hours before his death.
The 10 Things I Hate About You star was found dead in his apartment in January 2008 after mixing oxycodone, diazepam, hydrocodone and doxylamine.
“It was totally his fault. It was no one else’s – he reached for them. He put them in his system. You can’t blame anyone else in that situation,” Kim told the website, adding that it was hard to accept Heath was to blame.
“His sister was on the phone to him the night before telling him not to take the prescription medications with the sleeping tablets.
“He said: ‘Katie, Katie, I’m fine. I know what I’m doing’. He would have had no idea.”
Kim made the honest admission while speaking out against addictive opioid painkillers.
He said he believes his superstar son, who had a daughter with actress Michelle Williams, was easily able to get his hands on prescription medication because of his high-profile, and became reliant on them due to a taxing schedule of nights working on film sets.
