Mark Salling has been charged with two counts of receiving and possessing child sex abuse images, and will appear in court on June 3.
The 33-year-old former Glee star was arrested in December after police seized computer equipment that allegedly held thousands of images.
If convicted of the charges, the actor could be facing 20 years in jail for each offence.
Mark played bad boy footballer ‘Puck’ in the teen musical series, from 2009 till 2015.
Police were reportedly tipped off about Mark’s crime by the star’s ex-girlfriend, and after searching his property found illegal and indecent materials at the address.
Joseph Macias, a special agent in charge for the Department of Homeland Security reminded the public in a statement that child pornography suspects can be of “all ages and from all walks of life”.
He said: “The traditional stereotype about the kinds of people who commit child sexual exploitation crimes simply doesn’t dovetail with reality.”
Mark’s representatives have yet to release a statement on the matter.
