Their sudden separation came as a shock to many in Hollywood, but it’s now emerged that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie got tattoos symbolising their commitment to each other just a few months before they parted ways.

In newly released photos, Angelina can be seen getting a tattoo from ex Thai monk Ajarn Noo Kanpai, alongside her then-husband Brad Pitt while the two were in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in February 2016.

The couple got tattoos meant to ‘symbolically bind them as husband and wife’ in February last year.

The actress – who was in Cambodia to direct her Netflix film First They Killed My Father – got three new sak yant tattoos on her back from Kanpai (a traditional style involving geometric patterns, lines of script and animal shapes). Brad, meanwhile, got a Buddhist symbol tattooed on the left side of his stomach.

Angelina flew the tattoo artist in from Bangkok in order to get the ink, which was meant to symbolise her and Brad’s commitment to each other. The former couple would go on to separate just a few months later, in September.

Angelina later returned to Cambodia for her first official appearance post-split with her children Maddox, 15, Pax, 13, Zahara, 12, Shiloh, 10 and eight-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne in tow.

Together, the family celebrated the premiere of First They Killed My Father with a free public screening of the movie.

Based on a memoir by Loung Ung and recounting her personal experiences during the horrific Khmer Rouge years, the film is due to be released on Netflix later this year.
