The captain of the All Blacks has welcomed his first son with wife Bridget.

Kieran Read, 31, shared his happy news on his official Facebook page on Sunday, telling fans he was “teaching the wee man the art of Test cricket early,” as he posted a shot looking out over Hagley Oval, Christchurch.

Tagging the photo “future black cap,” Kieran also shared the new baby’s name.

“So happy to introduce the latest addition to the Read family. Reuben James Read, born 19/1/17.”

Kieran was a talented cricketer himself, representing Northern District and New Zealand teams in his youth.

But it was rugby that really stole his heart, and he made his All Black debut in 2008.

Kieran and wife Bridget already have two daughters, Elle, 5, and Eden, 4.

Back in September, the All Black family shared their happy pregnancy news exclusively with New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, telling the mag: “We’re stoked. It’s a great way to finish the family.”

And it seems as though Kieran had better luck with the timing of Reuben’s birth, after missing the birth of Eden in 2012 by just 10 minutes.

When Bridget went into labour, the rugby captain was in Wellington at the time, preparing for a test match against Argentina.

Despite hightailing it back to Christchurch, Kieran arrived just a few minutes too late to witness the birth.
