Tamati Coffey: Time to shine

We're down to the semi-finals and the acts need to step up.

New Zealand’s Got Talent is a fun show, and that’s the point, but now we are past the many hopefuls and into the semifinals, things are starting to get serious.

I’ve been asked if we’ve had to turn away some good talent in order to get a range of acts through to the last 30 – and the truth is, yes, it’s possible. But it’s about entertainment and we have to mix it up.

Ravi’s act didn’t hit the mark, but his wife still thinks he is great.

We could have filled half a dozen episodes with girls that played the guitar and sang songs they’d written themselves, but it wouldn’t be a good talent show if we did.

I’m a bit more up front and centre, less behind the scenes now, so you get to see more of me on screen. I’m having to work for my money! But talking to everyone about who they are and what they do is what I know. Some presenters worry about how they come across on TV, but getting back to work after my holiday feels like putting on an old pair of shoes.

Upper Hutt singer Renee Maurice has been a prolific entertainer all her life, but the 22-year-old hopes this show will be her big break. At the semifinals, she received rave reviews from the judges for her take on the classic hit The Wind Beneath My Wings.

Poor Ravi didn’t really pick up his game in the first semifinal – he needed someone to help with the choreography so he could show us something different and it didn’t happen.

But Ravi’s still a lucky man as his wife was there, just like she was in the heats. He knew he hadn’t done so well this time, but she was proud of him. In her eyes, he can do no wrong.

It’s no secret I love the Diamond Divas, but we are seeing such a great range of talent beyond singing – the unicyclists were just great! Their act was good in the heats, but in the semifinals they really took it up a notch.

I remember being in New Plymouth hosting the weather for Breakfast, and these kids turned up on unicycles. It’s definitely the new, old trend.

The judges did see a spectacular performance from This Is Unicycling, stunt duo Christian Huriwai and Mike Padial, who had the audience behind them.

My flatmate’s dad sent me a text to say that he had voted for Renee Maurice. That’s huge, he’s a staunch old Cantabrian – you definitely wouldn’t think he would be the type to vote in a talent contest!

Catch Tamati and the judges on New Zealand’s Got Talent on TV One, Sundays, at 7.30pm.
