His tanned and toned physique made him one of Hollywood’s hottest actors and saw him once crowned People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, but Jake Gyllenhaal was almost recognisable at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards this week.
Looking gaunt and pale, the 32-year-old has reportedly lost more than 9kg for his latest role as a freelance crime reporter in the upcoming filmNightcrawler.
The Prisoners star says he wanted his character to be “literally and figuratively hungry”.
“The movie takes place, in a land where I think there is a desert in a lot of ways, great opulence, and at the same time, great vastness and emptiness,” he told Us Weekly.
This isn’t Jake’s first dramatic physical transformation – in 2010, the Oscar nominee packed on the muscle, eating six small meals a day loaded with protein, carbs and fats, to play the hero in Disney’s Prince of Persia.
But he says there was no particular diet this time to lose the weight, adding, “I just love this movie,” he says. “That’s how I did it. There really was no technique.”
