‘Edible Auckland’ by Jennifer Yee

Now before you all start shouting that it’s not fair to review an Auckland food book when so many of you don’t even live here, can I remind you that you are allowed to visit? And if you do, you will find this a mighty handy little volume and can go home and show off to all your friends what delicious treats you found among all the lovely Aucklanders.

Jennifer Yee has left no crumb unturned as she’s trolled all corners of the queen city and beyond, seeking specialty food shops, hidden neighbourhood gems and open markets. It’s not a restaurant and café guide – there are plenty of those around – but rather a collection of places a foodie would love to visit if she likes a particularly tasty cake, a fresh piece of fish, a newly roasted coffee bean or the latest cooking implement.

If you’re after Indian spices, Asian sauces, Halal meat or a French market, it is all here, along with addresses, contact phone numbers and opening hours. If I was in Paris or New York, I would want this sort of information tucked in my handbag so I can only imagine visitors to Auckland will salivate over it. Plus, I live here and didn’t know there are nine tofu shops in town and a village market at onehunga every second Sunday.
