This was billed as a Christmas special, though there isn’t a piece of tinsel or a turkey in sight. It’s set in early autumn, when the Crawleys head to Scotland for a shooting party.
Meanwhile, the staff are left behind at Downton, where they get up to their fair share of mischief. There’s drama, a large helping of comedy and an end that may leave viewers shell-shocked.
Some characters are sadly underused (you can never have enough of Dame Maggie Smith) but in many cases writer Julian Fellowes is setting up storylines for the next series.
