This compelling novella, on which the movie above is based, from New Zealand author Witi Ihimaera tells the story of Paraiti; a woman whose scars are external. Nicknamed “Scarface” after being severely burned at a young age, she follows in the footsteps of her father and becomes a traditional Maori healer and midwife. Approached by Maraea, a servant needing help for her mistress, Paraiti meets the wealthy, arrogant and pregnant Rebecca Vickers, who hides her scars on the inside. In a collision of values and beliefs, the three women become part of a secret plot with serious consequences.
