The London coroner has closed the case on fashion designer Lee Alexander ocQueen’s death and the results are worse than anyone had feared. The visionary designer, who hung himself in February at age 40, had a lethal cocktail of cocaine and prescription drugs in his system at the time of his death.
Dr Paul Knapman, who oversaw the investigation, has announced Alexander “killed himself while the balance of his mind was disturbed”. He adds that the style guru “had a history of depression and anxiety, and was grieving his mother”. We’re told, “He had a past history of self-harm and, no doubt fuelled by cocaine, resorted to desperate measures to end his life.”
Alexander’s psychiatrist, Dr Stephen Pereira, added that although his fashion work put him under immense pressure, it was also “the only area of his life where he felt he had achieved”. The shrink adds, “After the shows, he felt a huge comedown. He felt very isolated and lonely – it gave him a severe low and high.”
During the hearing, details of Alexander’s suicide note were also revealed. The letter was written on the back of the book ‘The Descent of oan’ that included instructions on where to bury him. The note ends with, “Please look after my dogs. Sorry, I love you. Lee.”
