A new road sign outside a Canterbury high school has been installed to slow traffic and prevent accidents.

A unique ‘teenagers crossing’ road sign has been installed as a result of efforts by the Waimakariri District Council and Kaiapoi High – after several near misses in the area.

The sign depicts a boy and a girl crossing the road, their heads bowed to look at their mobiles, with the warning ‘Teenagers.’

Principal Bruce Kearney said that there are several near misses on the road each year, and so the school approached the council to come up with a resolution.

The school is situated near the Northern Motorway and Ohoka Road, where there are issues as students cross it each day.

There have been several near misses in the area, prompting the new sign

Council roading manager Ken Stevenson said: “Each problem has a different solution. This was a case of trying to put up something a little different so people do take notice of it.”

And although he admitted the traffic island was a “band aid” solution to a wider problem – he said it’s already serving its purpose in the area.
