Our dear old uncle is due to turn 100 next year. Do we have to do anything about him getting a message from the Queen, or does she somehow know anyway? It would be dreadful if he didn’t get one.
Of course the Queen knows, just like Santa is well aware of what you want for Christmas.
But, as with Santa, a word in the Queen’s ear doesn’t go amiss. To do that, contact the Congratulatory Message Service of the Department of Internal Affairs.
They can send you a form to fill out. They need to know what occasion is being celebrated, on which date, evidence of age if birth occurred outside NZ, full name and preferred name of person, and what address to send the card to.
You should make contact a couple of months before the event. The Queen will send cards out after the special day, but prefers not to.
Also, remember that the Queen sends out cards to her subjects celebrating diamond wedding anniversaries. And the Governor-General and Prime Minister also distribute golden wedding anniversary cards.
And the workload of the Congratulatory Message Service is certainly getting heavier, as the life span of New Zealanders increases. Last year, there were nearly 350 applications on behalf of those celebrating 100 years or more.
