‘Triplings’ fathers tell all

The Kiwi dads open up about their rocky road to fatherhood
David and Nicky Beard

Kiwi couple David and Nicky Beard made headlines back in March when they were trapped in Mexico with their three newborn babies after being scammed by their surrogacy agency.

The gay dads – whose “triplings” were born to two different surrogate mothers – were forced to rely on the generosity of strangers via crowdfunding website Givealittle after racking up debts of $118,000 debt due to the dodgy dealings.

But the nightmare is now over, and David and Nicky are at home in West Auckland with their nine-month-old babies, Kelly, Blake and Lachlan – and the loving pair are finally now recognised to be the children’s legal parents.

“I can’t stop smiling and then getting teary-eyed thinking of what it means,” says Irish-born Nicky. “I love them and David so much, and now we’re recognised as a family. Not that we weren’t a family before, but this is the icing on the cake.”

Proud parents Nicky, 33, and David, 45, speak exclusively to Pam Corkery about their rocky road to fatherhood. Read the story and see the gorgeous family photos only in this week’s Woman’s Day.
