Man catches ball at cricket game and claims $50,000

He had barely sat down when the ball flew towards him.

A 34-year-old builder from Dunedin has claimed $50,000 after catching a cricket ball with one hand.

Craig Dougherty had barely sat down at the third ODI New Zealand and Pakistan match in Dunedin, when the ball flew towards him.

“I had no time to think about it, I just stuck my arm out,” he said.

“It was literally just me with my arm out, the guys next to me had their hands in their pockets.”

Dougherty received the money as part of the Tui Catch-A-Million promotion.

Any spectator who catches a six one-handed while wearing a Tui shirt, in any of the 23 one day internationals or 20 T20 matches, is entitled to the $50,000.

According to The Herald, Dougherty had only purchased his Tui shirt ten minutes before the game.

“It hasn’t really sunk in yet, I can’t believe I caught it,” Dougherty told Sky Sports.

He said he might use some of the money to upgrade his car but had no other plans for his winnings.
