In the garden

By this time of year, roses and other flowers have done their best and hopefully given you a marvellous display.

Now it’s up to you to deadhead or remove all the old flowers so the plant looks tidier and can reorganise itself to produce more flowers come autumn.

For roses, take a clean pair of secateurs and remove the minimum amount of stem to remove the flower. Cut at a 45-degree angle that slopes down toward the centre of the rose bush.

The cut should be located below the first pair of leaves and directly above an outward-facing stem – a stem that points away from the plant’s centre.

Other flowers can be deadheaded by pulling or breaking off the old flowers.
