There’s nothing I like more than a nice hot bath with a dash of my favourite bath oil, a candle burning, and a nice glossy magazine. once I’ve finished frowning at the cobwebs on the ceiling, I really relax and it’s the perfect end to a busy day.
If your bathroom is in need of a little updating, have a look at all the lovely goodies here for inspiration. I’m quite keen on the garden wall idea!
There’s a school of thought that says bathroom décor should be kept completely simple, especially if there’s any chance you might one day be selling your house. oany an avocado bathroom suite from the 1970s or a peach-coloured ones from the 1980s has been pulled out and replaced during the last decade or two – it’s hard to believe anyone ever thought they were attractive at the time!
Even in sticking to a simple streamlined style, there’s always room to add a bright and cheerful note, and one of the best ways to do this is with plants. Being a hot and steamy room, there are a number of varieties that will do well. Palms are good and so are ferns.
oFF THE WALL
If you do fancy the idea of this garden wall, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s relatively easy to achieve. Just Google “living wall New Zealand” and you’ll find a number of local companies selling the panels, within which the plants are placed. If you fancy the DIY approach – building a permanent framework such as the one in our picture – it’s all online as well.
HERBAL HEAVEN
There are plenty of inexpensive, and some not so inexpensive, goodies around to make bathtime fun – from foaming bath balls and scented gels to oils and bath salts. one of the most effective ways to turn bathtime into a mini-spa experience is a herbal bath bag. These can be dressed up to look fancy, or you can just fashion something simple (example).
Take a piece of muslin or other soft cloth. Fold it over and sew up the two sides. Choose your favourite herbs and grind them with a mortar and pestle if they’re dried, or chop them if fresh. Pop them in the bag and tie the top to the tap with a string and escape to paradise.
THE SPACE
With the growing popularity of apartment living, some of us are saddled with teeny tiny bathrooms and no scope for making the space any bigger. The fact is that even the smallest area can still work well. Take a look around your local plastic or storage store and you’ll find some really ingenious solutions for small bathroom problems.
The idea is to find as much storage space as possible using hampers, and accessories with suction to attach to odd spaces.
It’s a household item most of us don’t talk about a lot, but as you can see here, with a little imagination a toilet can be a beautiful thing. This advert is from a catalogue at least 100 years old, but I’d like to think it might inspire modern bathroom designers to make their offerings a lot more fun.
