How Bazaar

Reuse and recycle retro items to revamp your interior design.

At op shops, garage sales, school fairs and galas, there’s always a queue at the white elephant stall – where one person’s trash invariably turns out to be someone else’s treasure.

Styling your home with a mix of vintage and second-hand finds is very popular right now, with inspiration being drawn from flea markets. Selina Lake and Joanna Simmons show you real abodes decorated with intriguing pieces from different eras and cultures. They explain how to take the things you love and create a living space that’s truly yours.

IN WITH THE OLD…

Classics – such as Eero Saarinen’s tulip table and chairs, designed in 1957 – work well in a bazaar-style home. Teamed with older pieces of furniture (such as a console table, and collection of vases, pots and lights), their clean modern lines are softened, but still act as a fresh contrast to the ornate carving and delicate details of their roommates. The mirror helps add a feeling of open space.

Top tip: Nood stores sell modern reproductions of Saarinen’s furniture.

Top tip: Trade Aid shops often have colourful rugs, throws and cushions from developing countries.

REST EASY

This bedroom has all the ingredients of a gentle feminine space – a twinkling chandelier, floral cushions, fresh flowers and pretty blinds, but without looking cluttered.

A bold print from Pakistan, mismatched cushions and the knocked-about feel of the chest of drawers give the room a lived-in look.
