DIY: Make your own side table

An easy-to-make nightstand just perfect for a book and a cuppa

This side table has a wonderful home-crafted look to it, like it has been cobbled together from odds and ends found lying around the garage. It’s precisely this Frankenstein feel that gives it such charm.

You will need

Things you will need to make a side table: wooden furniture feet, paint, drill with a 12mm drill bit, construction glue, 12mm dowel, handsaw and varnish or sealer
  • 6-8 wooden furniture feet depending on desired height. You can find these in two rounds. Ours are wooden craft rounds, but you could use marble chopping boards or recycled rimu
  • Paint, if desired. We used Resene SpaceCote low sheen in Resene Alabaster and Resene Gothic
  • Drill with a 12mm drill bit
  • 1 x Construction glue
  • 1 x 12mm dowel
  • Handsaw
  • Varnish or sealer. We used Resene Aquaclear waterborne varnish

Steps on how to make your own side table

Measure the centre of your wooden craft rounds

1. If you’re painting any of the feet, do this first and allow to dry. We used a combination of some painted in Resene SpaceCote low sheen in Resene Alabaster and Resene Gothic, plus others stained.

Using a 12mm drill bit, drill the hole in the centre of round timber

2. Drill a 12mm hole in the top and bottom round of timber, going about two-thirds of the way through.

Fit the dowel into the hole of the round

3. Make sure all the furniture feet have the same 12mm hole drilled in them. They may come with pre-drilled holes. Place a tiny bit of glue in the hole you drilled in the bottom round, and fit the dowel into this hole tightly.

Start adding feet, sliding each one over the dowel rod and putting a small amount of glue in between each

4. Start adding feet, sliding each one over the dowel rod and putting a small amount of glue in between each. A little glue goes a long way. Keep adding until you reach the desired height.

5. Cut dowel rod off using a handsaw, leaving about 10mm extra to allow for it to slip into the top round.

6. Put a final blob of glue on before adding the top round, ensuring it’s sitting level. Place something heavy on top, such as books, so it doesn’t move while glue dries.

7. Once it’s all dry, finish with a clear stain or varnish, if desired. We used Resene Aquaclear waterborne varnish.

Scale your bedside table to the space available and room size.
