9 time-saving life hacks

Muffin cases, ice cube trays, drinking straws.. these and other humble everyday items take on problem-solving superpowers thanks to a little lateral thinking

Brush with science

Test tube racks have come out of the lab and put to a range of uses. Our favourite is this handy makeup brush organiser. No more frantic fumbling in makeup bags!

Hole food

This one’s a winner for those camping holidays when the barbecue’s fired up and you need somewhere to put all those relishes and dips.

Juicy couture

Ice block drips can play havoc with kids’ clothes – but there’s an easy solution. Place a muffin case underneath, like an upturned tutu, and catch those pesky droplets.

Pincer mover

Getting your keys off a ring is maddening, not to mention how badly it mucks up your manicure. But a staple remover does the job in seconds. Just use it to separate the coils of the ring and… ta dah!

Heard it on the grapevine

To keep your wine chilled without watering it down with ice cubes, freeze some grapes and pop them into your glass. Cheers!

Straw power

Poke a straw through the bottom of a strawberry and the stalk comes out easily. No mush, no mess… it’s magic

Child’s play

A piece of Lego makes a great holder for your keys and chargers. Attach to the side of your desk and you’re sorted.

Beach party

You’re probably thinking we’ve gone delusional… but this really does work brilliantly! Cut a slit in the middle of this paper towel roll, slide your phone in, attach the plastic cups to the ends and your DIY speakers are good to go!

Tray chic

This one’s a gem. Instead of spending money on expensive jewellery boxes, store your rings in an ice cube tray. Paint it a lovely bright colour and no one will know it began life in your freezer.
