What’s the difference between use by and best before dates?

Here are some tips to help you know your way around use-by dates on food.

When is food really not edible? Do we go by the use by date or the best before?

Many of us waste good food because we think that it is past its best when in fact you could still get a few good days out of it.

Here are the definitions of both terms.

Use By:

You need to eat it before or on its use by date unless it has been frozen. Use by dates will appear on food, such as meat products, smoked fish and ready-to-eat salads.

Best Before:

This is more about quality and is usually put on tinned, frozen or dried foods. You can still eat the products after this date but it might have lost some flavour or texture.
