Urzila is currently touring her latest stand-up show, Token African, nationwide. The comedian and 7 Days regular will also star in a new Kiwi comedy quiz series that airs on TVNZ 2 later this year, Have You Been Paying Attention?
Have You Been Paying Attention? will test New Zealand’s comedy talent in a battle of wits each week. Regulars Urzila and Vaughan Smith from ZM’s Fletch, Vaughan and Megan radio show will showcase their current affairs knowledge alongside three rotating guests. The Great Kiwi Bake Off‘s Hayley Sproull will host the show.
Here, Urzila shares some surprising facts about herself.
My typical week
I wake up early because I have two kids. I pack lunch for my daughter and get her dressed. Usually my wife and I split these jobs, whoever packs the lunch doesn’t need to do the hair and teeth, but has to get breakfast down the kids’ necks. It’s all a big nag fest in the morning and it’s amazing how much you repeat yourself. Then it’s time for the school drop-off, pottering around at home, doing some work and playing with our dog.
My last supper would be…
Spaghetti Bolognese. It’s just the hardest to f*** up, so if someone else was cooking I’d want that.
For my wellbeing I like to…
Play golf as much as I can. It combines walking and fresh air – two of my favourite things, but the golf adds the sport element, which I like.
The city I’d love to live in is…
New York.
My most embarrassing moment was…
Oh gosh, there are so many. I would say, I was in high school and we had to wear tights. I had a pair of knickers over the top of the tights so they wouldn’t ride down. Something happened as I was climbing up some stairs in between classes – the hottest teacher in school was standing at the top of the stairs and, as I was climbing, my knickers fell off. I kind of walked out of them, but I nearly died that day. I tried to ignore it and just kept walking, but the teacher went and picked them up and handed them to me.
Top of my bucket list is…
To meet Oprah Winfrey.
My favourite quote or poem is…
“All things are ready, if our mind be so.” – William Shakespeare.
If I was stranded on a tropical island, I would need…
1. a Powerboat.
2. My mask and snorkel.
3. a Tub of Ice cream.
The book that changed my life was…
I’m going to say The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer, mainly because the poem in the beginning of the book is such a beautiful poem and something you can live a life by.
My advice to my younger self is…
You’ll be okay.
