Pick the right red
Not all shades are created equal. The key to pulling off a lipstick that looks effortless rather than overwhelming is knowing your skin’s undertone.

Cool complexion
If your skin has pink, rosy or bluish undertones – and your veins appear more blue than green – you’re likely in the cool category. Cool-toned skin pairs beautifully with blue-based reds, which create contrast, brighten the complexion and even make teeth look whiter – thanks to the optical illusion of the blue tone cancelling out yellow. Reach for classic cherry red and raspberry.
Warm hues
If your skin has golden, peachy or yellow tones and your veins appear more green than blue, you’ve got warm undertones. Look for orange-based reds that mirror the warmth in your complexion. These shades tend to look fresh, vibrant and sun-kissed rather than stark or overly dramatic. Think tomato red, coral red, terracotta or brick.
Not sure where you fall?
You might be neutral – a balance of warm and cool – which gives you the freedom to experiment with a wide range of reds. If most foundation tones suit you or you can wear both gold and silver jewellery easily, chances are you’re in this flexible middle ground. Lucky you – all colours are fair game!
The rules of red

Smooth lip surfaces
Lips need to be in top condition to pull off a bold lipstick. Regular exfoliation using a scrub will smooth the surface and prep them for application.

Line lips
Start with a lip liner to create an added layer of staying power – as lippy fades, you’ll have colour beneath – plus it helps stop feathering and rebuilds faded edges.

Condition between colour
Avid lipstick users need to keep lips in good condition. Moisturising is key and balms can still offer a hint of colour so you don’t feel bare.

Beauty Editor Anna’s top tips

Perky pouts: A trick to playing up the Cupid’s bow is to trace over the outer edge using a highlighting concealer.
Check your teeth: Pop a finger in your mouth, pucker and pull it out – any lipstick that would’ve landed on your teeth comes off on your finger instead.
Go for balance: Since a red lip stands out, keep the rest of your makeup balanced. Think fresh skin, a touch of mascara and a subtle flick of eyeliner. Let the pout steal the show.
