A touch of glamour
Louise Pilkington from Auckland salon Dry & Tea reveals how to get red carpet curls worthy of a Kardashian. “I use hot rollers as an alternative to tongs or irons, they’re amazing for a full Hollywood bouncy look. I take my first section from the crown, then the next section at the front from ear to hairline, winding up and back away from the face. I wind under the sections at the back and spray each section first with Redken Fashion Work 12 hairspray $36. You can also apply a little on the finished curl.” Try: Remington Runway Curls hot rollers $129.99.
Loosen up
Sunny Humphries of Auckland salon Dry & Tea explains how to get a soft, loose curl. “I find an iron the quickest and most effective way to create a soft, loose curl. First I apply a lightweight oil like Redken
All Soft Argan-6 $35 and blast dry. Then I apply heat protectant spray and section my hair, clipping the front back.
Taking sections starting at the nape I draw the iron straight from root to mid-length then begin to curl from mid-length to ends, using the irons like a pair of scissors when curling a ribbon. Be sure not to wrap the hair around the iron. Instead take a half wrap, slowly and gently pulling the iron downwards. Using the same process on the front section, curl the hair working away from the face. A flexible hairspray such as Pureology Colour Stylist Strengthening Control $37.50 will hold this curl and protect against drop or frizz.” Try: Ghd Gold Classic Styler $319.
Curl tips:
Always let a curl cool before breaking it up with your fingers.
If you have fine hair, try a volume-boosting product such as Sebastian Mousse Forte $39 to help define waves and curls.
If you have naturally curly hair then be gentle with it. Avoid vigorous towel drying and de-tangle with a wide-toothed comb – never a brush. Minimise frizzing by using a rich conditioner and not rinsing it out thoroughly. Apply a product such as Redken Curvaceous Full Swirl Cream Serum $35, twirling from the mid shaft to the ends following the direction of the curl.
For a tousled beach look, allow to dry naturally. Give your curls a next-day boost by dampening and applying a little more product.
Kate-style waves
I love the casual, tumbling waves favoured by Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge. The new Remington Keratin Therapy Hot Brush $89.99 makes these a breeze to achieve. I spritz some Eleven Australia Miracle Hair Treatment $32 into my hair prior to blow-drying as this multitasker is a heat protector with UV filters that also adds shine, controls frizz and moisturises. Once dry the trick is to comb your hair thoroughly, otherwise the hot brush will tangle in it. Then section the top, sides and back, pull each section taut and wrap around the barrel, winding up. Hold in place for up to 12 seconds before pressing the curl release button and allowing the curl to unwind.
