Ready, set, glow

Do your skin a favour and fake it with our top tanning products.

With such a massive trend for fake tanning, it’s no surprise to see beauty companies constantly coming up with new ways to get that perfect, sun-kissed glow –without the need to expose skin to damaging UV rays.

Luxury tanning brand St Tropez has just come out with a Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion, $44.99 (1). It’s designed to lather over wet skin for a streak-free glow. Simply apply it after washing yourself, wait for three minutes, rinse and pat yourself dry. Brilliant!

Self-tanning oils are another new trend and Bondi Sands Liquid Gold Self-Tanning Oil, $29.99 (2) is just about to hit the shelves. Enriched with argan oil, it’s dry within seconds but leaves a glowing sheen that continues to develop over eight hours.

Getting that “just got back from holiday” glow on your face can be a little tricky with regular tanning products but we’ve found a cunning solution. UK tanning guru James Read has released a BB Gradual Tan Pen, $48 (3). The tinted, anti-ageing, moisturising formula makes your skin look radiant.

When it comes to dimpled thighs, they look a whole lot better when they’re sporting a tint. Manuka Doctor has taken their bronzing solution one step further by adding a cocktail of skin-firming ingredients. The result is Manuka Doctor ApiBronze Anti-Cellulite Bronzing Gel, $49.95 (4), which includes manuka honey, purified bee venom and caffeine.

Gels are a popular addition to the DIY tan market – prized for their non-sticky nature and moisturising qualities. Another version, Sukin Sunless Bronzing Gel, $24.50 (5), helps to hydrate the skin, and for an organic version, try the Tantastic Self Tanning Gel, $34.90 (6).

The dilemma and hassle of waiting hours for your tan to develop before you can shower has stemmed a wave of “express” products like the Le Tan Express Tan Instant Express Tan in Foam or Spray, $22.99 (7) each. They allow you to shower as soon as 30 minutes after applying the product to get a subtle colour, with the option of leaving longer – one hour for medium colour, or two hours for a deeper bronze.

While it’s not a new concept, gradual tanners are still hugely popular for their “fool-proof” formulations and they just keep getting better. The equivalent of a BB cream for your body, they’re rich in emollients like shea butter and cocoa butter, and just make your skin look so much better with a lovely, healthy, sun-kissed glow that is easy to apply. You really can’t go wrong. Caffeine is one of the key ingredients in the argan oil formula of Moroccan Tan Glow 2 in 1 Extender + Gradual Tan, $49.95 (8).
