LIPS are naturally rosy, as they have the thinnest skin on our bodies – this is so they can be flexible enough for talking, making expressions and eating, but also means you can see the blood in them.

The top layer of skin is called the stratum corneum, and it is thinnest of all on the lips.

Lips also contain no sebaceous glands – which produce skin’s natural oils – hair follicles or the pigment melanin, making the skin on them almost see-through.

This means that the red colour of the blood circulating in the capillaries underneath can clearly be seen, making the lips appear pink.
