As much as we love those long, lazy summer days, all that sun can mean our makeup ends up sliding off and patchy.
Switching up your beauty routine can help protect your makeup from melting off in the sweltering summer heat – and to get the best advice for keeping your face on through the season, we sat down with renowned Kiwi hair and make-up artist Eithne Curran.
The beauty guru has recently launched her ‘party ready’ service offering a glammed-up hair, makeup and nail makeover just in time for the festive season.

How can you get makeup to last during summer’s hot and humid days?
Start with a really good base – cleanse your skin thoroughly, then apply a quality primer to prep the skin. Don’t forget to pop some sunblock on first! Once you’ve applied your makeup, finish up with a great setting spray or powder to make sure it doesn’t budge. You don’t have to invest in hugely expensive products to achieve the right results – you can even use natural rice powder as a setting powder, which works perfectly and is very popular in Japan!
What are your tips for getting enough coverage without having to wear too much product?
The first step is to make sure the skin is well cleansed and hydrated to create a flawless base, which will ensure even coverage. I am using Trilogy Make-Up Be Gone Cleansing Balm at the moment and it is very good – the coconut oil, mango butter and rosehip oil melts residue makeup and dirt away. Then choose a silky, lighter foundation that’s designed for light-medium coverage – my favourite is Chanel Perfection Lumiere, and I use the YSL Concealer Touche Eclat luminising pen to highlight. If your budget is low, you can mix your foundation down with your moisturiser to a 50/50 mix, which will give you a light and flawless finish and will make sure you’re covered without looking caked.
What’s your ideal beach beauty look?
Wild and natural! Don’t stress about looking too ‘done’ at the beach – now is the time to let your hair down and enjoy yourself. To me, there’s nothing more beautiful than a face with natural sun-kissed skin, a swipe of balm or gloss on the lips and a lick of mascara on the lashes, with salty locks that have been styled by nature. Embrace it!
What are the products you couldn’t live without during the Kiwi summer?
Sunblock is my number one beauty essential for summer – I can’t stress enough how important it is for keeping skin looking young for years to come. I love Dermalogica Solar Defense Booster SPF50. I also love a natural plant-based body oil for after I’ve been in the sun, my Black Collection Restore Treatment, Trilogy Rosehip Oil Light Blend for the face, and lipstick in Bobbi Brown Sandwash Pink for evenings.
What changes do you make to your own beauty routine for the spring/summer seasons?
Throughout spring my go-to makeup colour palette has been gold and lilac, which are beautiful soft feminine colours that suit the season. In summer, I don’t wear much makeup at all, as I love looking natural and embracing the season – if I do wear any it’s mascara to open up the eyes, a set of good strong brows and maybe a swipe of lipstick. If I am going to a cocktail party my application is fresh and clean with depth around my eyes and a nude lip.
