The Block stars Maddy and Charlotte tell: ‘We felt so alone!’

The new contestants already have a lot of enemies

A blow-up with their builder and snubs from their fellow contestants leave newbies Maddy and Charlotte Harry feeling isolated on The Block Australia.

“It was sad that our initial experience wasn’t overly positive,” says Maddy, 25. “We had thought people would really embrace us, but everyone had already formed cliques, so it was hard to break into those relationships. I actually felt very lonely.

“The boys were in their own little world and Kylie [Baker] was sadly quite cold. Unfortunately, it was a consistent theme. It was disappointing. We didn’t ever experience that kind of behaviour – even in high school.”

Charlotte, 22, adds, “It made us really upset. They didn’t take a lot of time to get to know us and our story, and also to this day, the majority of them don’t really know much about us.”

Happily, though, the contestants they replaced, Jesse Maguire and Paige Beechey, have reached out. Maddy tells, “They’ve been really supportive and lovely to us. They know the toll it takes on relationships as well as mental health.”

Unfortunately, Kitchen Week is a horrible time for the Sydney sisters, who are The Block’s youngest-ever contestants. Not only does no one acknowledge Maddy’s birthday, but they also butt heads with builder Zak Sydenham, who leaves Charlotte in tears.

Meeting Kyal and Kara on site, the sisters don’t hesitate to ask for help.

“I know tradies can be a little rough around the edges,” shares Charlotte. “But it was a little bit too rough for us. We’re not princesses – we were just asking for a bit of human decency.”

When Zak storms off site in a rage, they ask The Block all-stars Kyal and Kara to help them complete the kitchen, which only isolates them further from the other contestants, who think the sisters have an unfair advantage.

“We weren’t aware anyone was threatened by us asking the question,” tells Maddy. “We were desperate for a builder, so we didn’t think much of it.”

Meanwhile, following the revelation their co-star Ricky Recard has found love with a makeup artist on The Block, the girls have confessed the reality show has done nothing for them romantically.

Maddy laughs, “We started The Block single and then we left single.” Charlotte adds, “I honestly don’t know how anyone has time for that kind of thing there!”

The Block Australia screens 7pm Mon to Wed and 7.30pm Sundays on Three, streaming on ThreeNow.
