All the glitz and glamour at the NZ Television Awards

The stars pulled out all the stops for Kiwi telly's biggest night of the year

Celebrity Treasure Island host Bree Tomasel was the big winner at the New Zealand Television Awards, taking out the Television Personality of the Year trophy with a landslide public vote.

“I didn’t prepare a speech because I wasn’t expecting this at all,” the ZM star told Woman’s Day. “I’m a radio girl and TV is a relatively new passion. The only reason I took the job was because I never saw someone like me on screen – not a size eight, not proper, not super- feminine… I wanted to represent a different type of female. This one is for all the women who don’t fit inside the box!”

Also in the spotlight was children’s TV mastermind Janine Morell-Gunn, who received a haka from her colleagues after being presented with the Television Legend prize. She joked, “To be honest, my first thought was, ‘Am I really old enough?’ But now the Prime Minister has called the Black Ferns legends too, I feel really honoured.”

Janine also thanked her hubby Jason for his support, saying, “I know I wear the pants and that you happily iron them, but seriously, thank you for the sacrifices you’ve made.”

Acclaimed TVNZ drama The Panthers landed eight trophies and Newshub won Best News Coverage (for the fourth year running!) at the glamorous Auckland event, which was hilariously hosted by former Shortland Street star Kura Forrester. Of her figure-hugging Hailwood dress, she quipped, “If I can’t be funny, at least I can be hot! It has the glitz and glamour required, but I regret eating that mandarin earlier.”

Also making a splash on the red carpet was Kimberley Crossman, who said she looked like a “human traffic cone” in her eye-catching Effie Kats frock, which she “recycled” from the cast wardrobe of FBoy Island. She was accompanied by her boyfriend of six months, Tom Walsh, who was director of photography on her hit series Snackmasters NZ. “He’s the best and just so kind,” Kim gushes.
