Carrying out one of his first official duties at his grandfather King Charles III’s coronation, adorable Prince George was a bundle of nerves.
While the eyes of the world were on the tiny prince, the nine-year-old with his big brown eyes won over audiences as he performed his duty as a page of honour alongside seven other children, the first future monarch in modern royal history to be involved in such a service.
No one was prouder of the king-to-be than his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, who had spent the past few months preparing him for the biggest day of his life.
“There’s no doubt Kate and William were carrying most of the nerves on his behalf, but they’re incredibly proud of how brave he’s been,” says a palace source.
“William pulled George aside before the event and gave him a big hug and told him he was very proud of him.”
Despite his understandable anxiety, George has been quietly determined to rise to the challenge and has come to understand how significant it is in the process.
“While his parents didn’t make a big deal about it because they didn’t want George to get stage fright, with their customary skill, they managed to let their son know that this is a taste of what his future holds,” says our source.
“They’ve been quietly thrilled that he’s taking his role seriously but also in his stride. He is, it seems, a natural.”
Making them proud
Naturally, Princess Charlotte has enjoyed teasing her big brother about the outfit he wore – a page livery of a red coat with white breeches and buckled shoes. But when he wore it for the dress rehearsal, Kate and William were bursting with pride.
“Catherine in particular finds it difficult to imagine her little boy taking on such an official role so soon,” tells our insider. “She and William have always agreed on ensuring their children live as normal lives as is possible, and that George grows up relatively protected from his future role.
“But despite her concerns, watching George practise has made her feel confident that he’s ready to one day become king – she loves that he will always remember his role in such an important day.”
His grandfather, who he absolutely adores, has also been incredibly encouraging, especially during rehearsals, adds the insider.
“Charles gave him a few military tips about breathing through his nerves, staying focused and taking as much time as he needs. He even admitted to George that he was also feeling a little nervous in the lead-up to the big day but that this was perfectly normal.
“He explained how they were going to have a wonderful time and that he’s delighted he’ll have George by his side for it all.”
