“After many tests I was told the cancer had spread to the left side of my brain and, despite subsequent radiotherapy sessions, my oncology team have now told me there is nothing further they can do.”

Cancer diagnosis

Diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023, Mel underwent surgery to remove the lemon-sized tumor which was discovered during a scan. Throughout filming of the reality show, she revealed that she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy and had hoped to be eligible for a groundbreaking clinical trial, starting in March of this year.

She shared only a few weeks ago that she was quitting MAFS, “After 12 extraordinary seasons, I have made the heartfelt decision to step away from my role as an expert on Married at First Sight Australia.”

“What began as a small social experiment has grown into a global phenomenon, and I have felt truly privileged to be part of that journey. I am incredibly grateful to the fans, the production team, and my fellow experts for their trust and passion over the years.”

Mel has shared her cancer journey over the years and wanted to focus more on her health and wellbeing.

“My light is starting to fade”

After being advised that her cancer is now terminal, she shared, “My light is starting to fade — and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love. Simple tasks have become incredibly difficult and I am relying on my beautiful family to look after me. I honestly don’t know how long I have left, but I do know I will fight to my last breath and will be surrounded by the love and support of my people.”

“If I could leave you with one thing, it would simply be this: if something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It might just save your life.”

Support from friends

Former MAFS bride Lucinda Light commented, “Devastated. Mel, the impact you’ve had reaches far beyond any one place…it stretches across oceans, across the northern and southern hemispheres ~carried through your kindness, your wisdom, and the love you so naturally give.
