From that record-breaking sweep for La La Land to Meryl Streep’s powerfully eloquent anti-Trump speech, the 2017 Golden Globes had plenty of epic moments.
Stars walked the red carpet in the lead-up to the glamorous awards ceremony, although not all of them hit the mark when it came to their ensembles for the night!
Host Jimmy Fallon kicked things off with a lively pre-taped opening segment that riffed on the famous opening scene from La La Land, with celebrity pals including Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, the Stranger Things kids and Justin Timberlake all stepping in to lend a hand.
Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone and the cast and crew of La La Land were the big winners of the night, with the modern musical picking up a historic seven wins in total including Best Director, Actor and Actress (in the category of comedy or musical film) as well as best song and screenplay.
However, Meryl Streep earned perhaps the biggest reaction on the night with her impassioned acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award, in which the celebrated actress took President-Elect Donald Trump to task for seemingly mocking a disabled reporter while on the campaign trail.
“Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” she said, to ringing applause from the star-studded audience.
Another triumphant moment of the night belonged to Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross, who picked up her first nomination and win for Best Performance in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, making her the first black woman to win the category since 1983.
“This is for all the women, women of colour, and colourful people whose stories, ideas, thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important. But I want you to know that I see you. We see you,” she said in her heartfelt acceptance speech.
This year, several of Hollywood’s cutest couples also walked the red carpet together, including a loved-up Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard and Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel.
Ryan Gosling, who went solo on the red carpet, paid a touching tribute to his wife Eva Mendes in his acceptance speech for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
“While I was singing and dancing and playing piano … my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and trying to help her brother with his battle with cancer. If she hadn’t taken that on, I couldn’t have had that experience,” the father-of-two added.
“Sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, I love you,” he concluded, dedicating his award to the memory of Eva’s late brother Juan Carlos Mendes.
The Golden Globes also saw plenty of lighthearted moments, including a surprise kiss between Ryan Reynolds and Andrew Garfield as Ryan Gosling won for best actor in a film (musical or comedy) – a category Ryan Reynolds was also nominated in for Deadpool.
