Nicole Kidman finally explains her infamous ‘seal clap’ at the Oscars

The reason is more 'Hollywood' than we thought.

Cast your mind back to the Oscars 2017 and the ‘Best Picture’ blunder will immediately spring to mind as the most memorable moment. But, we have to say, not much else stands out.

Which is probably why Aussie darling Nicole Kidman’s weird clap went viral that day.

Yep, the world was transfixed by Nicole’s ‘seal clap’.

You get the idea.

But Nicole has finally explained why she clapped in such a peculiar fashion.

Talking to Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O, she was asked what was with the “seal clap”.

“Ok, here it is…” Nicole began before Sandilands interrupted her and said he’d been telling everyone it was because of her expensive jewellery to which she replied:

“You are so right, Kyle!”

“I’m so glad you clarified that because it was so awkward. I was like ‘I want to clap’ and I couldn’t not clap because then people would wonder ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?’ but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own and was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it.”

The ring in question was indeed gorgeous!

“You know they’re putting it on the big screen at Sea World?” Sandilands quipped with Nicole replying: “Is there not more important things to be focussed on than the seal clap?”

She has a point! The hosts also asked Nicole about the Oscars blunder and what it was like being in the audience when La La Land was mistakenly announced as the winner of ‘Best Picture.’

“That was bizarre, I have to say,” Nicole explained.

“I wasn’t sure what was going on, no one in the audience was. There was all this pulling of envelopes and people rushing around – I thought someone wasn’t well! And then I saw people’s faces dropping. It was bizarre.”

Nicole is currently promoting the amazing TV series Big Little Lies, based on Lianne Moriaty’s bestselling novel of the same name.

She plays Celeste and has a somewhat disturbing relationship with younger husband Perry, played by Alexander Skarsgård.

Of course Kyle couldn’t help but ask about the steamy sex scenes and Nicole’s nudity.

“Oh stop it, we only saw a glimpse,” Nicole scolded him.

And when asked what hubby Keith Urban’s reaction to her “grinding with Skarsgård” was, Nicole answered:

“You are so provocative, Kyle. He gets that it’s work”

The loved-up couple at the 2017 Oscars.

She did say Keith “was emotionally protective” over the character however, as she is in an abusive relationship.
