Kerre McIvor: New year, new life

Kerre McIvor is running into the New Year – with a new home in the Hokianga, a new job and new-found health and joy.

In an exclusive interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly at her new Northland haven, the popular radio host says she’s the happiest and healthiest she has ever felt – having just finished her sixth full marathon in Queenstown.

The five foot one, mother-of-one documented her running journey in her bestselling memoir From Short Fat Chick to Marathon Runner nine years ago, when she first conquered her fear of “double-bagging her boobs” and hitting the pavement. The weight crept back on and two years ago Kerre looked in the mirror and decided things needed to change.

“I don’t know what I had been looking at but it certainly wasn’t what I saw one day. I had a kind of ‘holy crap how did that happen?’ moment and then an ‘oh god I know how hard it is going to be to get [the weight] off!’ because I had done it before.”

But with the determination she’s renowned for, Kerre put her running shoes on again and shed a remarkable number of kilos through healthy eating and training.

And as she enters her 51st year, Kerre says she’s “the full package” as a result of finding mental peace and beating her inner critic.

“That was the gift I gave myself when I was 50 – getting rid of the mean voice in my head.”

In 2016 Kerre will tackle a new afternoon radio slot and shift focus to her home in the Hokianga – where she will eventually live full-time with her husband Tom McIvor. The stunning Northland property has become the focus for many of the larger-than-life broadcaster’s dreams.

“I’ve got a million plans, and the beauty of it is I can now start to dream about the next phase.”

For the full story on Kerre’s transformation, her big plans for 2016 and stunning pictures taken in the Hokianga see the January edition of The Australian Woman’s Weekly, on sale Sunday December 20.
