Cathriona, a 30-year-old makeup artist originally from a small town in Ireland’s County Tipperary, was found dead in an apparent suicide in her Los Angeles apartment on Monday night, by two friends who had gone to her property to check on her.
The friends reportedly found a suicide note at the scene, and authorities suspect a drug overdose after several pills were also allegedly found near Cathriona’s body. However, the official cause of death has yet to be confirmed.
Cathriona, who was most recently pictured with on-off partner Jim Carrey in May, is said to have broken up with the actor just last week. The two first began dating in late 2012 before breaking up for the first time in March the following year. Earlier this year, however, they seemed to have rekindled their romance after being spotted together again on several outings in New York.
After the heartbreaking news broke, Jim released a statement saying he was “shocked and saddened” at Cathriona’s death.
“She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled,” he said.
“My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
