Hollywood’s silver foxes: The pro-ageing poster girls

Once upon a time, having grey hair was the kiss of death for any actress. But these silver sisters – in their sixties, seventies and beyond – are proving they’re still box-office gold!

Jane Fonda, 85

“I’m 85 and feel better than ever,” Jane Fonda declared recently. The Barbarella star, who successfully fought off blood cancer, is making the most of her golden years and the work just keeps rolling in! In 2022, Jane finished a seven-year run in the Netflix comedy Grace and Frankie, and this year, she starred in the movies 80 for Brady and Book Club: The Next Chapter. She’s made an estimated $417 million in her 63-year career, and brand and culture expert Nick Ede predicts she’ll easily make another $20 million “from L’Oréal and other brand partnerships in the next decade”.

Diane Keaton, 77

Ever since she charmed the world as Woody Allen’s leading lady in the 1977 hit Annie Hall, Diane Keaton has been on Hollywood’s radar – and nothing’s changed, even though she’s about to turn 78! This year, Diane appeared on the big screen in Book Club: The Next Chapter and before that, she was in 2022’s Mack & Rita. “I may be a caricature of my former self,” laughs the star. “I’m still wearing wide-belted plaid coats, horn-rimmed glasses and turtlenecks in the summertime. So what? Nobody cares but me.” Diane’s worth around NZ$170 million and there’s no sign she’s slowing down.

Joan Collins, 90

Notorious for her role as Alexis Colby in Dynasty and marrying five times – currently to a man 31 years her junior – Dame Joan Collins is still turning heads. She threw a huge birthday bash to celebrate her 90th birthday in May, alongside her husband Percy Gibson, 58 – although she’s known for dismissing talk of age, saying, “Age is just a number. It’s totally irrelevant unless, of course, you happen to be a bottle of wine.” With an estimated net worth of $50 million, her latest book, Behind the Shoulder Pads: Tales I Tell My Friends shares some of the most memorable moments from her life, both in and out of the limelight.

Helen Mirren, 78

She’ll go down in history for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II on the silver screen, but a lot of scripts have passed through Dame Helen Mirren’s hands since then. Just last year, she looked handy with a shotgun in Amazon Prime’s Yellowstone prequel 1923. Helen has also let her hair down on the catwalk in recent years, showing the likes of Kendall Jenner, 28, how it’s done, silver goddess style! “Other people call it growing older, but I call it growing up,” she says. Helen has a net worth of around $170 million and, says Nick, “Her film career is still up there and her recognisable face makes her eternally popular.”

Meryl Streep, 74

Meryl Streep was turned down for the 1976 version of King Kong for being too ugly! She’s since won three Oscars and at 74, continues to be a drawcard. In recent years, she’s been in everything from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again to Big Little Lies. “I remember as I was hovering around 40, I thought each movie would be my last,” Meryl recalls. But, of course, she’s still here! The star, who recently revealed she’s been living apart from husband Don Gummer since 2017, has a bulging $170 million in earnings and, says Nick Ede, “is still turning heads and looking absolutely fabulous”.

Andie MacDowell, 65

She’s adored for her roles in Ground Hog Day and Four Weddings and a Funeral – and as Andie MacDowell has aged into a silver foxette, she’s never been out of work. Most recently, she’s starred in the acclaimed Netflix series Maid, opposite her youngest daughter Margaret Qualley, 29. The former model – with an estimated net worth of $42 million – is a global ambassador for L’Oréal Paris and she’s loving every minute of her still-thriving career. “Living in the moment starts to become a power – like a superpower – as you get older,” says Andie. “As the years pass, I prefer to use the word ‘mature’ as opposed to ‘old’. I feel better than ever – confident and comfortable.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, 65

From her very first movie role in 1978’s Halloween, Jamie Lee Curtis has been on Hollywood’s A-list – and she’s never stopped dazzling her fans. Most recently, she’s been in Knives Out and Halloween Ends – and, of course, she won an Oscar for last year’s Everything Everywhere All At Once. The star has an estimated fortune of $100 million and she says of her career longevity, “I’m pro-ageing! I feel more alive today than I ever have!”

Judi Dench, 89

British “National Treasure” Dame Judi Dench has made no secret of her battle with macular degeneration, which has made it almost impossible for her to read scripts in recent years. The actor, who famously played M in eight James Bond movies, has an estimated $83 million nest egg thanks to her 66-year career. And despite her eye problems, she was recently nominated for an Oscar for her role in Belfast. Nick says more brand endorsement offers are likely to come Judi’s way if she wants them, saying, “Everyone knows Judi’s face.”
