A fall at home on January 11, 2015 left Susan fighting for her life in hospital and needing months in a brain injury rehabilitation facility. But one year on, Susan says she is “back to normal” and credits her sons for helping her get through the traumatic time.

In an exclusive interview with Woman’s Day, Matt, 22, and Alex, 25, reveal the awful experience of nearly losing their mother was life-altering and has made their family bond even stronger.

They say they’ve spoken to Woman’s Day because they want to celebrate the fact their mother is with them today – and to give thanks publicly to the many people who helped in their hour of need.

“It’s the fact that we are actually able to sit here with Mum and tell our story that’s so remarkable,” says Matt. “We came so close to losing her.”

Alex agrees, and says it was the skills that Susan instilled in them growing up that helped them cope last year. “She’s always been so determined, focused and hardworking, and I guess that sort of positivity has rubbed off on us,” says Alex.
