Angelina Boyd’s wild wedding

The barefoot bride made a plan B for her big day

Angelina Boyd doesn’t consider herself unlucky, but as the charming and chatty Radio Hauraki DJ prepared to tie the knot with her longtime love Rich Grey, she couldn’t help but wonder if she was paying some form of karmic retribution.

“Let’s just say we had the craziest run of unfortunate events leading up to it,” Angie giggles from her honeymoon hideaway in Papamoa. “Rich’s van was broken into and his work gear got stolen, the cat needed emergency surgery and someone crashed into the bridal car. Then a weather bomb turned up on the day. It got to the point where it was hilarious. I just had to laugh.”

While a string of bad luck like Angie’s might be enough to throw any regular bride into a tailspin, the beloved radio personality took it all in her stride on her big day. Opting to throw their back-up plan into action, including a rain-resistant marquee and new wheels, Angie and Rich, both 36, managed to make up for the lack of sun with their sunny dispositions.

“We married at a beautiful venue in Tauranga, but there was just this crazy wind,” says Angie, who wore a lace and beaded Pronovias gown from Modes Bridal. “Luckily, we had a marquee that we ended up decorating and had the ceremony in that instead. It turned out beautifully. I think everyone else was more stressed out than I was. By that point, I was happy to go with the flow.”

Just over a year in the making, Angie and Rich’s nuptials saw 130 of their closest friends and family gather for a laid-back day full of love and laughter. “I was nervous I’d be crying all over the place,” says Angie, who met Rich at a wedding four years ago. “But I just had so much fun. I was grinning all day. At one point during the ceremony, I almost started laughing.

“I was quite nervous about walking down the aisle, but as soon as I arrived and saw Rich, I was just excited. I wasn’t teary or anything – I was just happy to see my best mate standing there waiting for me.”

While Angie admits the planning of their nuptials was a joint effort, Rich did manage to sneak in one surprise for his bride. At the reception, the groom, looking handsome in a navy Working Style suit, grabbed his chance and asked the wedding party to gather around.

“He had a band set up and started to serenade me with a Jimi Hendrix song,” Angie tells. “It was so romantic.”
