Queenstown, New Zealand
While some of the North Island seems to miss out on autumn completely (hello Auckland rain storms), the changing seasons in the South Island are truly a sight to behold.
Queenstown as the leaves change from green to red, orange and yellow should not be missed.
Lake Taupo, New Zealand
For those of us stuck up north with no hope of flying away, a road trip on one of the long April weekends could be the perfect way to soak up the last of the sun. Taupo is less crowded, yet still temperate throughout the month, and many still brave a swim.
Hawaii, USA
Return flights to Honolulu from Auckland are looking reasonable for the month, making our Pacific sister island doable for many sun-seekers looking to escape the autumn showers. Be sure to take in the lava fields, the beautiful beaches and chat to the locals as you go.
Lima, Peru
The capital of Peru is notorious for its humidity, but April gives a welcome break from the heat of summer. Daytime temperatures are warm and nights are still temperate, and there’s virtually no rain. Plus, with the summer season officially over, you can enjoy paying off-season prices for hotels and hostels, and get by on even a tight budget. If you have time, be sure to head down the coast to explore more of this fascinating country.
Marrakech, Morocco
If you’ve ever been to Africa during the height of summer, you’ll appreciate that it’s not the best time to take in the sights of this glorious continent. Marrakech can be stinking hot during the summer months, but in April it’s pretty perfect. A light layer will suffice during the day, with a jacket popped on top for later in the evening. Plus, it’s perfect wandering temperature as you explore the medina, or take in the Sahara on a day trip out of the city.
Seville, Spain
Seville is taken over by the Semana Santa festival in April – their own special celebration of Easter. And if this isn’t enough to sway you, the city is also covered in orange trees, has some of the best tapas in Spain, and has some of the most photographable streets we’ve seen.
Copenhagen, Denmark
This scandi city has become more popular with European tourists thanks to an increase in flights, and is now dirt cheap to get to from several main cities in the UK and on the continent. If you’re planning a European adventure this April, cool Copenhagen is definitely worth a stopover. Visit the alternative community of Christiana, or check out the Tivoli Gardens for starters.
Louisiana, USA
If you get in quick, you’ll catch the French Quarter Festival that takes place in the second week or April. A free music festival featuring hundreds of local jazz, blues and Cajan sounds that made New Orleans famous, you’ll be dancing your little socks off all week long. Two weeks later, Jazz Fest comes to town, meaning music lovers will truly relish the sounds of this wonderful city in April.
